Caring for your artwork

Eight simple rules will keep your framed artwork looking its best for years.

Avoid heat
Do not hang artwork above radiators and protect it from sudden temperature changes. Normal range: 12–25 °C.
Beware of humidity
Humidity buckles paper and encourages mould. Normal range: 40–60%; wait six months before hanging on fresh plaster.
Hang at eye level
Align several pictures along their top edges or centres. Laying them out on the floor first makes it easier.
Hang securely
Hooks, fittings and wire must be rated for the weight of the framed work — especially in a child’s room.
Clean with care
Dust with a clean, soft, dry cloth — no water or cleaning products. Apply glass cleaner to the cloth, not to the glass.
Inspect regularly
Fading, spots or sagging canvas — time to visit a framing workshop. Restretching is recommended every five years.
Mind the light
Do not hang artwork opposite a window: direct sunlight fades colours. UV-filtering glass helps protect it.
Transport with care
Hold the frame on both sides. Store pictures upright, glass facing glass.
